Il est important de prendre le temps de remplir correctement son dossier d'inscription et d'y joindre les documents et photographies demandés en prenant soin de respecter les formats et spécifications techniques sous peine de voir sa candidature invalidée.

Les résultats du tirage au sort sont communiqués par l'administration américaine aux heureux gagnants par courrier au printemps de l'année suivante. Ils ont alors quelques mois pour remplir les dernières formalités administratives, payer les charges nécessaires à l'établissement des papiers et entrer en possession de leur carte verte. C'est aussi durant cette période que les demandes de visas pour les autres membres de la famille : le conjoint et les enfants âgés de moins de vingt-et-un ans doivent être effectuées. Il est alors temps de commencer la nouvelle vie rêvée depuis tant d'années.
